The Dallas Stars have been improving their play in recent weeks.
The squad led by Lindy Ruff is currently riding a three-game winning streak that included tough wins against contending teams like the Boston Bruins and the Detroit Red Wings, but they will have an even more difficult matchup for today as they will host the current Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks at the American Airlines Center.
While it’s true that the Blackhawks are the favorites due to the way they’ve been playing as of late, the Stars can’t be counted out to pull off an upset at home. The team has been very solid in front of their fans, and there’s also a sense of revenge with the Blackhawks after the heavy defeats Dallas suffered last season.
To pull off the upset, the Stars will need to play an perfect game from start to finish, but they have the weapons to create damage on the offensive side of the puck. Tyler Seguin seems to be re-discovering the form he had with the Bruins, Jamie Benn started the season playing some great hockey, and some role players like rookie Alex Chiasson and veteran Ray Whitney can make things happen when given the chance.
Dallas will also need a strong performance from Kari Lehtonen. The goaltender has been very solid since returning from his injury, and he will need to be at his best to stop players like Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, two of the most gifted offensive players in the league.
The Stars are surely hoping that the support of their fans and the positive streak they’ve been through can be a factor for tonight’s game, but one thing is certain: due to their play in recent games, the Stars have a good chance to defeat the current champions if they can execute their game plan.
