The New Jersey Devils could not score on Friday night against the Los Angeles Kings. That changed just one night later.

The Devils welcomed the Pittsburgh Penguins into the Rock on Saturday in a game that could have quickly gone the wrong way. Andy Greene started the scoring when his shot at the end of the first period somehow deflected past Marc-Andre Fleury to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.  Within five minutes of the start of the second period, that lead was gone. Adam Henrique’s pass went past Marek Zidlicki for an easy breakaway. Martin Brodeur did all he could to poke check the puck, but it still deflected into the top of the goal.

That is where it could have all fallen apart. That is what happened when the Penguins played the Nashville Predators the night before.  After allowing the first goal in that game, the Penguins scored the next four unanswered. That would be a situation that Devils fans have gotten used to, based on earlier this year. Fortunately the team decided to fight back.

Adam Larsson scored the second goal when his shot off a Travis Zajac pass went under the armpit of Fleury. That ended up being the game-winning goal as the Penguins could not score again.

Brodeur was absolutely fabulous. He stopped big shots against Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, Kuntiz and James Neal.  He only allowed one goal against on 28 shots.  He was a monster in net and nobody was going to take that away from him. He was the star of this game. He has been amazing after a horrendous start to this season.  He is the reason why the Devils are back in the race for the Metropolitan division.

Jaromir Jagr scored two insurance goals late in the third period to put the game away against his former team. That puts him at 688 goals on the season, just two behind the best Penguin of all time Mario Lemieux. He leads the team with 16 points on the season.

The phenomenon that is the lack of goal scoring when Cory Schneider is in net over when Brodeur is in net, is astounding. It is something that needs to be addressed, but for now they should just embrace this win. They beat the favorite in their division by a considerable score and that is something to build off of.
