Alain Vigneault said that Marc Staal was day-to-day with a neck issue. He said that the team doctors will be watching Staal closely over the next few days to see if he experiences any concussion symptoms. If for some reason Staal is out for an extended period of time, it will really hinder the New York Rangers when it comes to trading Michael Del Zotto.

Everyone within the Rangers organization and the league know that they have been trying to move Del Zotto. There was an offer from the Ottawa Senators, but the Rangers did not like the return they were getting. But now that Staal is out, the Rangers have to hang onto Del Zotto. They are already thin with defenseman and can’t afford to trade any forwards to acquire a d-man.

The best-case scenario would be that Staal misses about a week or two with this neck injury and doesn’t experience any concussion symptoms. The worst-case scenario is that Staal suffered another concussion and will be out indefinitely. Either way, Del Zotto is going to be wearing the blue and red for the foreseeable future. I know that really upsets a lot of Rangers fans. Del Zotto has really fallen out of favor with the Garden faithful.

If Staal is out indefinitely, it is a golden opportunity for Del Zotto to regain some semblance of the player that was so hyped up just a couple of years ago. Whatever happens, Del Zotto isn’t going anywhere for a while.
