5 Reasons Why The New York Rangers Should Look Into Trading Dan Girardi
Dan Girardi is usually not a name many New York Rangers' fans bring up when talking about players that need to be traded. This is because he technically does not need to be traded, but I feel it would be a good idea to.
The Rangers are now 15-17-1 in a season that once again had high hopes and the Rangers failed to deliver. Luckily we are only in December, and there is still more than half a season to go. However, things need to change fast for the Rangers if they want to go anywhere this year.
I am not saying Girardi is to be blamed for the Rangers' struggles. This Rangers team is filled with so many filler players it is not even funny. There are too many guys that just fill up a roster spot and do nothing to contribute positively to the team.
One might wonder why the Rangers can't just trade those guys. Well, what good players could you possibly get in return for below average players?
You have to trade someone good in order to get someone good back in return. This is not a video game where you can hit the force trade button and trade Taylor Pyatt and Benoit Pouliot for Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien. This is the real world and things do not work like that.
So, why do I volunteer Girardi to be a player that the Rangers should look into trading?
There are five good reasons to trade Girardi.
5. Team Needs A Spark
The Rangers have currently lost four games in a row and are showing no signs of improvement or effort, which is unacceptable.
You can trade guys like Pyatt and Pouliot all you want but trading them would not send a message to the rest of this team to wake up. You have to trade a guy that the players would not expect in order to get their attention.
4. Team Needs More Physicality
Even though the Rangers recently called up physical defenseman Dylan McIlrath, the team still needs to get more physical, especially from their defensemen. Unfortunately, Girardi is not physical.
Too many times I see players on the other team knock down Henrik Lundqvist and no Ranger swoops in and makes that player pay for his actions. Every team out there knows the Rangers are soft and that they can get away with anything; that needs to stop immediately.
3. Can't Play Man To Man Defense
Girardi excelled in the zone defense implemented by former head coach John Tortorella, but under new head coach Alain Vigneault and his man-to-man defense, Girardi has failed to keep up with his man due to his lack of speed.
Girardi would definitely benefit from a trade to another team playing zone defense and depending on how desperate the team is, you could definitely get something good in return.
2. Is An Unrestricted Free Agent After This Season
An unrestricted free agent after this season and currently making $3.325 million, I say it is a strong possibility Girardi will not be here next season.
Not only is he struggling to adapt to Vigneault's system but will probably want a raise like most players and frankly, he does not deserve it. The Rangers should trade him so they can at least get something in return, instead of letting him walk for free.
1. Team Needs More Scoring
The Rangers' calling card for years now.
This team just cannot score goals, put the puck in the back of the net, light the lamp, or whatever else you want to call it.
Girardi is a defensive minded defenseman, and the Rangers desperately need to acquire scoring at both the forward and defensive positions.
This I feel is the biggest reason why the Rangers should look into trading Dan Girardi.
