After a few days off around the holiday season, the Boston Bruins came out firing in tonight’s game. Tuukka Rask made 33 saves in a 5-0 shutout victory and David Krejci, Brad Marchand and Jarome Iginla each had goals in the win over the Ottawa Senators. But the other two goals belonged to Reilly Smith as he continued his breakout season for the Bruins.

Smith had two goals to give him a total of 14 on the season, a number which now leads his team. That also gives him five goals and seven points in his last three games. His 30 points on the season are also second on the team behind Krejci’s 33. What makes the play of Smith even more phenomenal is that prior to the start of this season, Smith had only played in 40 NHL games. In those games, he had a total of three goals and six assists.

To give even more credit to the job Smith has done this year, his average time on ice per game is 14:05. That ranks him eighth among forwards on his own team. He is putting up the second most production up front while not getting nearly the amount of ice time as some of the other forwards.

Smith is taking advantage of all of his opportunities and has really excelled playing with Patrice Bergeron and Marchand. The Bruins knew if they were going to have any chance to make it back to the Stanley Cup Finals they would need to find some offensive production outside of Bergeron, Krecji and Milan Lucic and Smith has answered the bell and then some.
