It has been a horrible start to the year for New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. He has struggled with inconsistency and has had a hard time stringing two wins together. After his last two performances it is safe to say that Lundqvist is beginning to find his groove.
There have been a number of different excuses as to why Lundqvist has struggled so much. In the beginning, people were wondering if the pressure of playing in a contract year was the reason why Lundqvist was struggling. After he signed his new seven year extension the struggles continued. Lundqvist sat three straight games in favor of rookie Cam Talbot.
Lundqvist got the start the other night against the Tampa Bay Lightning and played very well. Even though he gave up three goals, he stood on his head in the third period. It looked like the old Lundqvist who bailed out the Rangers after they continually made mistakes. Last night against the Florida Panthers, Lundqvist put on an awesome game. He stood on his head and kept the Rangers in the game until they found a way to win in a shootout.
Not to beat a dead horse, but Lundqvist is the Rangers’ best player and they will only go as far as he takes them. Having Talbot is good for the Rangers, especially in an Olympic year, but Lundqvist has to play well.
The Rangers are starting to heat up. They have won four of their last five games and are starting to find a groove offensively. They need Lundqvist to continue his great play and be their backbone like he always has been.
