Although Philadelphia Flyers rightwing Matt Read traveled with the team to the Midwest to face off against the Colorado Avalanche, he is one of the team’s scratches in Thursday night’s game. Read did not skate with the team during their morning skate in preparation for the game, and Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced that he would not be in Thursday’s game.
The word right now is that Read is day-to-day, with rumors that he could be back on the ice on Saturday when the team travels to face off against the Phoenix Coyotes. Read has another mysterious upper body injury, which really could mean anything in this sport, especially since the Flyers’ GM is so shifty about his players’ injuries. Due to Holmgren’s skirting of injuries in the past, rumors are already circling of the possibility that it is a concussion.
During their game against the Calgary Flames, Read took a hit from Brian McGrattan and didn’t look too good after he got up from it. He only skated a shift or two after that. During the hit, he took an elbow to the head, which is why fans are starting to believe Read may be concussed.
If Read is out for awhile, it will be a huge blow to the Flyers’ offense. Read has been a cog in the machine that helps get things together for the offense. They still have a strong top line that will be trying to make up for the loss in Read’s absence, but it definitely will have an impact.
