Boston Bruins’ Torey Krug Deserves A Long-Term Contract

James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

Torey Krug should have been named to the United States Olympic roster. This guy continues to  be impressive for the Boston Bruins. Krug scored two goals against the Winnipeg Jets in a 4-1 victory yesterday afternoon. It is time to lock this kid up long-term. The Bruins have had some legendary defenseman over the years: Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, Don Sweeney and so on. Krug has already shown that he has the potential to be a superstar in the NHL.

The Bruins have given contracts to guys like Phil Kessel and Tyler Seguin before moving them because they were detrimental to the team. I would rather the Bruins sign a character guy like Krug and have him in the organization for years to come. The Bruins always have the option of moving him later on.

The Bruins still have their core defenseman under contract. They just signed Dennis Seidenberg to an extension at age 32. I understand that hockey players can play into their 40s, but Krug is only 22-years old. Young solid defenseman are hard to come by.

There is no question that Krug is special. He still has a lot to learn. He is one of those players that you want to have on your team for years to come. I would hate to see him line up for another team down the road. I would much rather have Krug before he hits his prime rather than making a deal at the deadline for another Joe Corvo or Tomas Kaberle. We all know how those deals have worked out in the past for the Bruins.
