It’s that time of the year, when Olympic countries announce their roster for the upcoming Sochi tournament, and one of the most talented teams made their squad public today.
Aside from teams like Finland and Canada, it was the time for Russia to make the announcement of their 25-man roster today, and they have a star-studded team in all areas of the ice that should be able to contend for the gold medal from the start of the tournament.
The most talented area of the team is the forward line, without a doubt. The attacking group will be headlined by quality players like Washington Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin and Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin, and as long as they lead the team, Russia will have one of the best attacks in the competition.
The blue line isn’t too shabby either, and with players like Montreal Canadiens’ Andrei Markov and Edmonton Oilers’ Anton Belov, Russia should be able to have a good defensive performance. Reigning Vezina Trophy winner and Columbus Blue Jackets star Sergei Bobrovsky will be the one between the pipes, and his presence alone will guarantee Russia to stay in the majority of the close games.
It’s worth noticing that there are some wild cards in the roster like Dallas Stars’ rookie sensation Valeri Nichushkin, as well as several players that feature in the KHL, Russia’s top league and one of the best all over Europe. It’s clear that there is a strong balance between youth and experience, and if things go as expected, Russia will be one of the top teams in the latter stages of the competition.
