Calgary Flames Show Heart in Loss to Pittsburgh Penguins; End Goalless Streak

Even though the Calgary Flames lost another game, there are a couple of players looking very good for them right now. One of them is responsible for ending the Flames long goalless streak just before they were shutout for the third straight game and the sixth time in eight contests. It didn’t end with the goalless streak snapping however. The Pittsburgh Penguins had to fight to keep the Flames from tying the game down the stretch.

There is something to be said for a team that continues to fight when they are down. Just after their goalless streak and shutout trend continued against the St. Louis Blues, the Flames very nearly found themselves shutout once again but did what they had to do to score a goal at last. Mikael Backlund scored the lone goal for the Flames and he and defenseman Mark Giordano were the stars of the game for the Flames.

As the Flames go forward from this point they can at least look at some things that are going right for them. They were able to take advantage of a 5-minute major penalty and never let up pressure against the Penguins down the last quarter of the final period. The same kind of toughness and heart that they showed against the mighty Penguins is exactly what they have to harness to climb out of the funk they have been in.

To be one of the more struggling teams in the NHL, the Flames are certainly not boring to watch on the ice. This team fights and more times than not will make any opponent earn every minute of a win. Don’t be surprised if they begin to really turn a corner before the end of this season.
