It is always good for a NHL team to gain two points with a win and that goes without saying. The two points gained by the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night against the Los Angeles Kings were extremely important points indeed. In the process of the win the Red Wings might have seen a promising new combination between two players who were vital to the road victory in Los Angeles.
In the Eastern Conference the Red Wings find themselves right in the middle of a gaggle of about eight teams within two points of each other. If the Wings had not won on Saturday night in a tough game against the Kings, they would have been falling towards the lower section of those teams in points. With the win they sit at 50 points and are in position to climb on top of that bunch of teams as the season barrels on forward.
With a recent time of somewhat struggling for the Wings, it was likely very good for their fans to see good work between Tomas Tatar and Riley Sheahan. Each scored a goal assisted by the other in this game with Tatar’s 10th giving the Red Wings the lead mid-way through the final period. There could be more of these two together moving forward if they continue to work well when on the same line.
The final good thing about this tough win for the Red Wings was goalie Jimmy Howard. Howard came up huge against the relentless offense of the Kings with 44 saves on 45 shots. With the Wings facing the hottest team in the NHL tomorrow night – the Anaheim Ducks, winners of 16 of their last 17 games – this win looms that much larger.
