Playing at Joe Lewis Arena is usually a very good thing for the Detroit Red Wings but that has not been the trend this season and the losing record got one loss worse in a loss to the St. Louis Blues. On paper this was a bit of a mismatch because of the Red Wings being just rattled with injuries to some of the best players in the NHL and the Blues playing extremely well for the balance of the season. When the game went live on ice there weren’t many surprises.

Unfortunately the Red Wings just could not match the offensive attack of the Blues. They were outshot 39 – 23 and that includes 10 shots in the third period alone. The first two just saw nothing for the Wings who continue to struggle in spite of the promising play of Riley Sheahan and Tomas Tatar among a few others. It seems that things really are as difficult as they seem for the Wings right now.

There is good news though. Eventually the Wings are bound to get healthy. When they do they will very likely still have a real chance at the playoff picture. A healthy Red Wings will be quite dangerous in the NHL playoffs if they can hang on long enough to get there. They still have a fighting chance against most teams even now but when it comes to the elite teams like the Blues, the Wings are just outmatched for now.
