Joe Pavelski: San Jose Sharks Player of the Week

Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports

The San Jose Sharks won every game they played this week; they’re on a six-game winning streak and have won eight of their last 10 contests. While strong goaltending has helped this hot streak stay alive, one Shark has been playing at a level above the rest.

His name is Joe Pavelski, and he’s San Jose’s player of the week.

The 29-year-old forward has an astounding 10 points in his last five games. If that doesn’t impress you, maybe this will — seven of those points are goals.

Last Saturday, Pavelski scored his first career hat trick in a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. He followed that up with a two-goal performance against the Calgary Flames at home on Monday.

Pavelski’s goal-scoring streak was extended on Thursday night when he potted the lone goal in a 1-0 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Not only was it his sixth goal in three games, it was also the third straight contest in which he scored the game-winner.

The Minnesota Wild managed to put a stop to Pavelski’s goal-scoring streak last night, but they couldn’t keep the Wisconsin native off the score sheet entirely. Pavelski registered two assists, including the primary helper on Joe Thornton‘s overtime tally that sealed a 3-2 victory for the Sharks. He also won an astonishing 80 percent of his faceoffs.

With perhaps the best week of his career now in the rearview mirror, Pavelski will aim to continue building on a terrific season. He has 28 goals and 25 assists for 53 points in 52 games, all but guaranteeing that he’ll surpass the career-high 31 goals he registered two years ago.

As for the Sharks, they’ll try to extend their winning streak to seven when they host the rival Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. The Kings will be a hungry for a victory, having lost their last four contests and dropping to sixth place in the tightly contested Western Conference.
