It was a fruitful night for the men in orange and black. The Flyers on this night broke out of their funk behind some great goal tending from Steve Mason and offense from two of their top centers in Claude Giroux and Vincent Lecavalier. Frankly, the offense has been missing from these two for much of the season.
Giroux is currently on a points hot streak, but Lecavalier has struggled to get much going all year. If the Flyers are going to pull themselves together and make something of this season, these two will need to be the catalysts.
The Flyers have under-performed this season, no doubt about it. The expectation was that they would be a top four team in the East, especially with their free agent signings in the offseason. It just hasn’t panned out for whatever reason.
The defense has been suspect and lately Mason has been off his game. They are also lacking the offensive punch of recent years. Is this the start of a turnaround? It would be fitting in a way.
On this night, the new Flyers took down some of the old Flyers. It was a win that the Flyers desperately needed. They still have three games to go on this Western road swing. They will need to make the most of it if they want to play beyond April.
