The New York Islanders have called up three players from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on an emergency loan. The three players called up were Ryan Strome, Anders Lee and, last but not least, Mike Halmo. Strome and Lee were expected to get a shot with the injuries to John Tavares and Frans Nielsen. Halmo on the other hand was a bit of surprise because he was signed as more of a depth player by the Islanders a few years ago. Some fans are up in arms about the Islanders calling up all three guys, but I like it for a few reasons.
The Islanders were practicing with nine forwards yesterday; one of which was Eric Boulton. The Islanders’ organization knows what Boulton brings to the table, and there is no reason he should be dressing for any games going forward. It is time for the Islanders to see what the guys in Bridgeport can do. Strome, Lee and Halmo make up the first line for the Sound Tigers, and have been very productive all year. Keeping all three of them on the same line at the NHL level can make the transition easier, and could be a spark plug for the team going forward.
Fans are very disgruntled and upset about this season, and they have every right to be. Coming off an epic playoff run last season, the fans and organization had high expectations to be a contender this season. Unfortunately, the Islanders were not able to put it all together, and there is blame to go all around. It is time now to get the young guys some NHL experience, and make the best out of a disappointing season.
