The Los Angeles Kings will look to spoil the Calgary Flames‘ return tonight as they face off for the third time this season. The Flames are one of the Western Conferences’ bottom-feeders currently sitting in 12th position. Despite their overall record, they are coming off a 6-3-1 run before the Olympic break.
Calgary has also had the Kings figured out this year, beating them in both outings. L.A. will look to continue their positive return following last night’s 6-4 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.
L.A. managed to turn around their lowly offense and put in six goals on 28 shots, getting all top-six forwards involved. On the flip side, they uncharacteristically gave up fours goals in the defensive end. Rookie Martin Jones was between the pipes, and despite the historic run (8-0, .87 GAA) he had to start off his career, he is 1-4 in his last five starts.
Tonight, Jonathan Quick will make his return and is sure to settle things down on the defensive end. Calgary will be starting young Finnish goaltender Joni Ortio in his NHL debut.
With stability on the defensive end, L.A. will look to build on that offensive momentum behind streaking forwards Jeff Carter and Anze Kopitar. With young Ortio making his NHL debut, the Kings will look to apply the pressure early on and expose the rookie goaltender. The countdown is on: with 22 games left to play and the trade deadline fast approaching, there is plenty to play for.
