The biggest name rumored to be moving during the NHL trade deadline has finally been traded. Thomas Vanek has been traded from the New York Islanders to the Montreal Canadiens for a second-round pick and prospect Sebasatien Collberg.
This is an awesome trade for the Canadiens as they completely stole Vanek. The Canadiens are a smaller team that scores off the rush often. They needed a player who can get to dirty areas and score goals. Vanek does all of that, and he is also going to be great on the power play for the Canadiens.
As for the Islanders, you have to be disappointed in the return value for Vanek. For the biggest name on the trade market they only got a prospect and a pick. They gave up much more to get Vanek knowing that he was an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.
This is an awesome deal for the Canadiens. They are one of those teams in the tier just below the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference. Now they have made a significant leap and can be one of the teams that can contend contend in the east.
The best part is that they didn’t have to trade anyone off of their active roster. Depending on who the prospect is, this could be one of the steals of the last 15 years with regards to NHL trades. The Canadiens did an excellent job flying under the radar and waiting for the perfect time to get Vanek.
