The New York Rangers have had an illustrious and praised history. One of the most talked about and important positions in the game of hockey is the goaltender, where the Rangers have had many superstars in their history. But who is the best goaltender in New York Rangers history?
While Dan Blackburn only played 63 games in his career -- all with the New York Rangers -- he was on track for success. Before suffering an injury that ended his career, Blackburn was part of the NHL First Team All-Rookies team and was one of the highest praised Rangers prospects of the time. If he did not injure himself, there is no doubt Blackburn would have been a Rangers star.
While John Davidson only had 123 wins in his NHL career, 90 of these were with the New York Rangers. Davidson is best known for leading the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1979 on an injured knee, proving himself as one of the greatest goaltenders in Rangers history.
John Vanbiesbrouck is the starting goaltender who preceded Mike Richter. Vanbiesbrouck is best known as being a solid goalie who led the Rangers to the playoffs multiple times. He is also known for his extreme durability, returning from injuries weeks before he was expected to, and consistently playing well despite his injuries.
After setting the Rangers' record for most regular season shutouts and now being tied with current Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, Eddie Giacomin is one of the best goalies in Rangers history. After leading the Rangers to the playoffs countless times, the only thing that hurts Giacomin is the fact he could never win the cup.
After leading the Rangers to the playoffs countless times, winning the Vezina Trophy, tying Eddie Giacomin for most regular season shutouts in franchise history and notching his 300th career win, Henrik Lundqvist is one of the best the Rangers have ever seen.
The best goalie in New York Rangers history is easily Mike Richter. Not only does he lead the Rangers in career wins, but he was a fan favorite. However, the deciding factor on this decision is an obvious and easy one; he is the only goaltender on this list to lead his team to a Stanley Cup victory.
