With Ryan Callahan gone, the New York Rangers are looking for a new captain. Coach Alain Vigneault has said that a captain won't be named until the summer out of respect for Callahan. With the Rangers having a team mixed with veterans and youngsters, there are many players who can be the next captain. Here are five candidates who could be the next captain of the Rangers.
Rick Nash has experience being a captain. During his tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets, he served as the captain for four years before being dealt to the Rangers. He isn't very vocal and can disappear at times, but he is still the team's best offensive player.
Brad Richards has been an assistant captain on three different teams including the Rangers. He is a veteran and has been through a lot in the NHL. He is one of only two players on the Rangers' roster to win a Stanley Cup.
After Callahan's departure, Dan Girardi was promoted to being the third alternate captain. Girardi is a homegrown talent and embodies everything a defensive defenseman should be. He leads by example and is one of the most well-liked players on the team.
Another homegrown talent, Marc Staal is the longest tenured Ranger besides Girardi. He is another player who leads by example. He has had injury trouble in the past, but is still a player who can lead.
Everyone expected that someday Ryan McDonagh would be the next captain for the Rangers. It just so happens to be that the day is coming sooner than expected. McDonagh is the Rangers' best player and does everything. He has developed into one of the best defenseman in the game and is locked up for the next seven years. Even Nash gave his endorsement for McDonagh as the next captain of the Broadway Blueshirts.
