Dallas Stars Showing Enough Promise to Make the NHL Playoffs
The Dallas Stars are in a hard fight against the Minnesota Wild and Phoenix Coyotes to make the playoffs in the Western Conference. While it’s true the Stars are currently the odd team out in this equation, they are getting closer to the final eighth spot thanks to an unexpected resurgence in the last weeks of the regular season.
It’s no secret they took another huge step forward tonight against the Washington Capitals.
The Stars kicked off a tough Eastern Conference trip at the Verizon Center against a team holding a battle of their own to make the postseason and it’s safe to say the Stars outplayed them and dismantled them completely. Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom couldn’t do anything against Kari Lehtonen, and the Stars were sharp offensively on their route to a 5-0 win that keeps them alive in their playoff quest.
An opener from Tyler Seguin and goals by veteran Ray Whitney, Ryan Garbutt and two from Dustin Jeffrey were enough to beat Washington. It was one of the best offensive performances from the Stars this season and they clearly have enough depth on their roster to make the playoffs with players like Jamie Benn, Valeri Nichushkin and Lehtonen anchoring the squad on both ends of the ice.
With only seven games remaining in the schedule – including a potential decisive game against the Coyotes in the final contest of the regular season – the Stars need to win as many games as they can. They have improved their play against tough rivals and while it might not be enough to clinch their objective, it’s undeniable the team is on the right track. That’s all they can do right now.
