Being a Philadelphia Flyers fan is something unique. It's not something you can just acquire. You have to be born with it. When things go wrong, you can't just jump ship either. You stick through thick and thin -- through the good times and the bad. I often wish that team loyalty was like it was 40 years ago. There were no bandwagon jumpers or hopping from one team to the next, and it got me thinking: What makes a true Flyers fan?

As I said, you have to be born with it. If you've been to at least a dozen games before the age of three, you'll have no problems rooting for the Flyers as you get older.

I don't care if the other four apply to you. If you don't meet this criteria, you're not a true fan. If there is one thing in life you truly hate, it's the Pittsburgh Penguins -- particularly, Sidney Crosby.

You are seriously suggesting that the primary component of being a “true” Flyers fan is hating the Penguins? Hating Crosby?

Wow. That is SO messed up.

I was a Flyers fan well before I was a Pens fan. I was a Flyers fan when Bobby Clarke came to town and the Broadstreet Bullies were born. It was the 70s and they changed the game and business of hockey. They were the team I loved first – when I was a child. I do not live near either place – the place I live has no team of its own.

I became a Pens fan when they drafted Lemieux – I’d watched him play a lot of junior hockey and was a big fan.

I kept both teams as “favourites” – eventually forming a permanent attachment to the Penguins and they have been my team since I became an adult. I still love the Flyers and hope for them when they are not playing the Pens.

Yes, I am a real fan. I pinched myself and it hurt, so that means I am real, right?

Oh – it was the Legion of Doom, not the Legend of Doom.

But a real fan like you was probably just doing that to see who would notice, right?
