Ryan Getzlaf was named one of three finalists, with Sidney Crosby and Claude Giroux, for the Hart Trophy. This is the award for the NHL MVP. All three of these finalists have had great seasons, but Getzlaf's was slightly better. There are five main reasons why he deserves the Hart Trophy more than anyone else in the league.

Ryan Getzlaf is one of the best two-way forwards in the league. He plays as hard on the defensive side as he does on offense, and you can tell that he is motivated to win. Stats just come with his skill, but his hustle is about his mindset on the ice. He ranks 13th in the league in plus/minus, while Crosby ranks 47th and Giroux ranks 152nd. He is well above his competition when it comes to keeping goals out of his own team's net.

Getzlaf is not the kind of player who shoots just to shoot. He puts the puck on net to score. While that sounds obvious, some players just throw the puck at the net and pray. Crosby is shooting at a 13.9 percent clip and Giroux is at 12.6 percent. The numbers don't look like they are that off, but one percent is roughly equal to 23 shots. Getzlaf didn't waste a single one.

The Anaheim Ducks had to go up against teams like the Kings, Blackhawks, Blues and Sharks all season while his opponents got to beat up on a lesser Metropolitan Division, and the rest of the East, all season. Despite that fact, Getzlaf led his team to the No. 1 overall seed in the West. They weren't picked to have home-ice advantage by anyone in the preseason. His two counterparts were picked by many to lead that conference, which neither did.

Most players in the NHL who are elite scorers get a lot of their points when they have the man advantage. It seems Getzlaf looks to help others score on the PP. He only has five power play goals while he recorded 18 assists. That means he has 26 even-strength goals, which is more than Crosby and Giroux. He does it when his team needs him most.

Getzlaf is second in the league in blocked shots for a forward. His 87 blocked shots are second only to Boyd Gordon for tops in the league. You never see stars who put their body on the line like this. He only wants to win and means more to this team on all sides of the puck. Giroux is decent at this stat, and he recorded 46 on the season. Crosby fell into 28 on the season. This shows that the way that Getzlaf plays the game warrants MVP honors.
