Vancouver Canucks Rumors: Top 5 Landing Spots for Ryan Kesler

Vancouver Canucks center Ryan Kesler has wanted out of Vancouver since at least the trading deadline in March. With full-scale changes ahead for the Canucks and a rebuild in store, look for the Michigan native to be moved soon, likely at this month’s 2014 NHL Draft. The following five teams would be the best fits for Kesler.

Kesler played his best hockey under Alain Vigneault and his big-game acumen would mean he wouldn’t be a “deer in the headlights” of Broadway’s lights. The Rangers’ impending salary-cap hell this summer makes this deal unlikely despite how well it would work for both sides on the ice.

4. Boston Bruins

There is bad blood between the Bruins and Kesler (his antics during the 2011 Final are still a sore spot in Boston), but his grit and defensive acumen would fit right into Claude Julien’s system. Boston’s depth at center would likely see Kesler moved to the wing where he could see an uptick in offensive production.

Reportedly, Kesler was signed, sealed and delivered to Pittsburgh at the deadline before the Canucks’ ownership blocked it. Given the tumultuous changed the Penguins have undergone, they appear to be less desirable of a destination than they were a few months ago. Still, a team with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin cannot be ruled out.

Kesler is a Michigan native and plays a two-way game that fits the Red Wings' system perfectly. The Wings need secondary scoring and would surely benefit from his grit and tenacity in their, at times, “soft” lineup.

The Ducks are legitimate contenders and have plenty of resources to give the Canucks in return for Kesler. Him anchoring the Ducks’ second line and providing secondary scoring behind the dynamic duo of Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry would be a force. The only hold-up could be Vancouver’s unwillingness to keep Kesler in the Western Conference. If the Ducks put a good enough offer together, that may not matter.
