5 Ottawa Senators Players Who Won't Be Back In 2014

The Ottawa Senators are one of the biggest disappointments in the NHL this season. They were picked as dark horse Stanley Cup representatives by some analysts. The trade to bring in Bobby Ryan to replace departing captain Daniel Alfredsson had the entire city excited to start the season. All those expectations only amounted to a season with a playoff appearance. These five will be wearing different sweaters next year as a result.

Milan Michalek is two years removed from scoring 35 goals for the Senators. He also played all 82 games last year, which shows his durability after the lockout-shortened season. This will make some teams try to overpay for his services this offseason. The price will knock Ottawa out of the race pretty quickly.

Just one year after the team lost their longtime captain to free agency, the heir apparent is asking to be traded. The Sens' GM came out and said that Jason Spezza would like to play for a different franchise. The team showed they are willing to oblige by making this news public, which will ultimately bring back a nice return for the Senators as they say goodbye to their second captain in as many seasons.

Ales Hemsky came over in a midseason trade after spending his entire career with the Edmonton Oilers. The Ottawa Sun did all the work here, announcing that Henmsky would not return to the team in the offseason.

Matt Kassian played in 33 games last season, and he averaged less than five minutes of ice time per game. That in itself shows that the team isn't very excited about the 27-year-old left winger. Don't expect him to make another appearance for the Sens.

This is the biggest surprise on the list. Craig Anderson was one of the reasons people picked the Senators to make it far in the East. With Robin Lehner's contract up, and Anderson's having one year left, the team needs to make a decision. I think they will re-sign Lehner and look to jump on Anderson trade value. He will go to a team that loses out on Ryan Miller.
