5 Players The Montreal Canadiens Must Build Around

This offseason, the Canadiens must rebuild a roster that will be hit hard by free agency. Although the team is aging, the Habs do have a few young stars they need to sign to long-term deals. The future seems promising in Montreal if the Canadiens can build around the key players they already have in their lineup.

Carey Price is the cornerstone of the Canadiens franchise right now. He led the Canadian national team to Olympic gold, and if he would have been between the pipes for the remainer of the series with the New York Rangers, the outcome could have been much different.

If the Canadiens lose P.K. Subban this offseason, their defense is going to need a lot of work. The majority of their defensemen are in there thirties, but the one bright spot they do have is Nathan Beaulieu. The 21-year-old saw limited action this season, but he managed to notch two assists in the playoffs for the Habs. Beaulieu can distribute the puck well from the blue line, and when he does rush the puck up the ice, he can make things happen.

Galchenyuk entered the league as one of the youngest players and immediately made an impact. A smooth skater with silky hands and stellar vision, what more can you ask of a forward? Galchenyuk and Gallagher are two players that the Canadiens need to sign to long-term deals. Both are offensive threats, but Galchenyuk is the most promising player on the Habs' roster.

2. Max Pacioretty

Pacioretty is a class act and nothing short of a stud. He is loved by fans and respected by players. His offensive ability is obvious, but as a two-way forward he is greatly underrated. Pacioretty's big body makes him a presence around the net, and he always gets to loose pucks. The Canadiens have him signed to a hefty contract, so clearly the front office felt they could build their team around a player like Pacioretty.

Will P.K. Subban remain in Montreal next season? That is up for debate, but there is no question that the Habs are going to try to keep Subban for one more run at the Cup. Besides being one of the most promising young stars in the NHL, the Olympian is already a leader. On the ice he communicates well with his teammates and quarterbacks the play in the offensive zone. If the Habs can hang on to him, they will be a top contender for the Cup.
