5 Players the St. Louis Blues Should Build Around

Even though the St. Louis Blues lost in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, they showed us that they are becoming a tough opponent. The Blues already have a concrete foundation, but if they correctly build around these five players, they are guaranteed to make it farther in the playoffs next year.

5. Kevin Shattenkirk

Kevin Shattenkirk played his best NHL season last year. He scored 10 goals and racked up 35 assists for a total of 45 points in the regular season. Shattenkirk is a great offenseive defenseman, but lacks in size and strength. The Blues have already established a fairly solid defense, but if they could find a bigger and stronger partner to level Shattenkirk out, the Blues' defense would be a lot harder to penetrate.

4. Jaden Schwartz

Jaden Schwartz is capable of fulfilling the roles of a center and left wing, so his versatile gameplay is perfect to build around. Schwartz is young, fast and just beginning to prove himself as a great player.

3. Joakim Lindström

Joakim Lindström has a lot of potential, but he has never been given more than one consecutive season in the NHL to prove his worth. Lindström was signed to the Blues last year after helping Skellefteå AIK win another consecutive title and being selected as the MVP of the Swedish Hockey League. Lindström obviously has talent, so he might be a smart player to keep around and build off of.

2. Vladimir Tarasenko

Vladimir Tarasenko played only 64 regular season games last season due to a wrist injury, but during those 64 games, he posted a total of 43 points. Tarasenko is excellent at handling the puck and making sure it finds its way to the back of the net. The Blues are searching for a center this offseason, so Tarasenko would be a great winger to build off of.

David Backes, who finished fourth in the running for the Frank J. Selke trophy, has been an asset for the Blues. Backes can play both center and right wing, and he has shown his strength through his hard hits. It would be wise of the Blues to offer a contract extension and build around this mighty two-way center.
