Canadian super-phenom Connor McDavid is the projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft and could be in some truly elite company when it’s all said and done. Having said that, going No. 1 in the draft is no sure thing for McDavid as soon to be Boston University Terrier and Chelmsford, Massachusetts native Jack Eichel is breathing right down his neck. The “Connor vs. Jack” storyline will be one of the more intriguing draft storylines in recent years and will be at the forefront of conversations all season long.
Neither McDavid nor Eichel snuck up on anyone as the hype surrounding each player goes back many years. McDavid became the fourth player in the history of the Ontario Hockey League to be granted “exceptional status” and allowed to play in the league at 15. Meanwhile pundits have said Eichel has the potential to go down as one of the greatest American born players of all time. It’s worth noting for all the hype, neither player has turned 18 meaning there is still plenty of time for them both to exceed the heavy expectations on their young shoulders.
While McDavid will be entering his third season with the OHL’s Erie Otters, Eichel will be a 17-year old freshman at BU with the weight of turning around that program on his shoulders. Look for McDavid to put up 100 points in Erie and Eichel to have one of the best freshmen seasons in the history of college hockey. The two will also have the chance to head at the World Junior Championships in January. The rivalry is just getting underway and we’re 11 months from the draft and over a year from their respective NHL debuts.
In a league that’s been for the most part deprived of great one on one rivalries this could be one for the ages.
