Rumors have been circulating that the NHL is planning on expanding the league to 34 teams. It is speculated that these new teams will be planted in Toronto, Quebec, Las Vegas and Seattle. The NHL has had some crazy ideas in the past, but this is by far the craziest and most detrimental idea they have had in a while.

Here are five ways the rumored four-team expansion would hurt the NHL.

The NHL is rumored to expand their league to areas across the United States where people couldn't care less about hockey. This raises the risk of future franchises having to relocate or worst — folding. It is not a good look for a professional sports league.

The NHL isn't in dire need of any additional teams, so the idea of adding four more makes the league look needy. The NHL is already capitalizing on the over-saturation of outdoor games by creating the Stadium Series. It's acts like these that make the league look bad and are part of the reason why people don't take the NHL seriously.

Out of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, all but one (the NFL) houses 30 teams. Why the NHL thinks it would be a good idea to have a total of 34 teams is beyond me. There are not enough hockey fans for 34 teams and it is just completely unnecessary. If the NHL goes through with the expansion, the cut-off point should be at 32 and the teams should be added to the Western Conference.

Where is the NHL going to find enough players who can play professional hockey for four new teams? The NHL already possesses teams that look like they were formed by coaxing random Joes off the street. If the NHL expands to four more teams, managers will be forced to lower their expectations when signing newer players.

Hockey is Canada’s game, so why does this rumored expansion only include two Canadian teams? There are plenty of areas in Canada that would love nothing more than a hockey team. These teams would also have a much better chance at thriving somewhere in Canada rather than places like Seattle or Las Vegas. The league needs to take a step back and think about the best options for both countries involved.
