The NHL season officially starts in less than 48 hours, and this season figures to be just as exciting as last year's. There are many question marks for teams heading into the season. Opening night rosters should be finalized within the next day or so, and then it is time for the games to start. So without further ado, here are 15 bold predictions for the upcoming season.

After making some great trades and signings this offseason, the New York Islanders will win a playoff series for the first time in 20 years. John Tavares will lead a potent offense, and new additions Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy will solidify a shaky defense.

The San Jose Sharks are trying to get rid of some older players, most notably Joe Thornton. Thornton is still a productive No. 1 center, and he will be traded before December rolls around. Look for a contender to grab Thornton to solidify their depth down the middle.

After a disappointing season with the New York Rangers, Rick Nash appears to be ready to rebound. He has looked solid in the preseason and will rebound big time this year. He will regain his net-front presence and score 45 goals, leading a Rangers team that won't score much to begin with.

12. Ryan Johansen Misses First Month Of Season

Ryan Johansen and the Columbus Blue Jackets are in the middle of a nasty contract dispute. Johansen wants to be paid like a star, and the Blue Jackets think he needs to prove himself for another year. Johansen's camp will not cave to their demands, and Johansen will miss the first month of the season.

The Winnipeg Jets are clearly in a rebuild, and they aren't going to sniff the playoffs in a ridiculous Western Conference. They have a young sniper in Evander Kane who has been in trade rumors for the last couple of years. Expect the Jets to trade Kane before the new year, and expect him to head out to the Eastern Conference.

The Flyers have a great offense, but their defense is in shambles. Steve Mason is a solid starting goaltender, but he isn't one to save a team's season. That is what the Flyers will need from Mason in order to make the playoffs this year, and they won't get it. The Flyers' defense will lead to a horrible season in which they are one of the 10 worst teams in the league.

The Capitals have another new coach, but Barry Trotz isn't going to get intimidated by Alexander Ovechkin. The Russian sniper is going to buy into Trotz's defensive system and score less than 40 goals for the third time since coming into the league.

The Wild shocked many people last season by winning a first-round series and pushing the Blackhawks to six games. They signed Thomas Vanek to boost their offense, and will take another step forward this year. They will eventually find a goalie that gets hot and the Wild will advance to the Conference Finals.

7. Colorado Avalanche Miss Playoffs

The Avalanche defied all the analytics last year, but their lack of possession skills finally hurt them in the playoffs. They are everyone's choice to regress from last season, and they will narrowly miss the playoffs in a tough as nails Western Conference.

Ben Bishop had a breakout season last year, earning Vezina trophy consideration. Thanks to some great offseason additions, the big goalie will win that trophy this year. He will be the runaway choice for the honor, and will lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to big things.

The Lightning had one of the best offseasons of any team in the league, getting better defensively. They will also have a full season of Steven Stamkos, who might lead the league in goals. They will also have the Vezina trophy winner in Bishop, and will advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since the 03-04 season.

4. Marc Andre-Fleury

The playoff failures continued for the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, but Marc Andre-Fleury wasn't the main culprit. However, Fleury will be the scapegoat this year, and will eventually lose his starting job at some point before the playoffs.

3. St. Louis Blues Win Presidents Trophy

The St. Louis Blues upgraded their offense by signing Paul Stastny, which benefits everyone, especially David Backes. The goalie position will benefit greatly from the team system, and the Blues will roll in the West this season. They will win the Presidents Trophy by at least five points.

2. Chicago Blackhawks Lose In First Round

The Chicago Blackhawks locked up corner stones Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, but they will regress this year and lose in the first round of the playoffs. Brad Richards is an upgrade at the No. 2 center position, but he will struggle against the stronger, faster centers in the Western Conference. The salary cap will eventually turn this team from elite to mediocre, starting this season.

The Los Angeles Kings will win their third Stanley Cup in four years. They are simply the deepest team in the NHL. The only weakness you can say about the Kings is their lack of ability to score during the regular season, but once mid-April comes around, they figure out how to score. They will begin a dynasty that will never be duplicated.
