5 best Calgary Flames Prospects
Chris LaFrance-USA TODAY Sports

The Calgary Flames have been using the NHL Draft to build a deep pool of prospects that have fans intrigued. The Flames have missed the playoffs five straight years, but the young talent in the system has provided a sense of optimism. The seasons that Joe Colborne and Sean Monahan put together last year show that youngsters can make an impact on this team. Here's a look at who's next.

Poirier was selected in the first round of the 2013 draft and has shown his versatility by the age of 19. He has been praised for his powerful first step. He will start the season with the Adirondack Flames. He scored two goals in two games at the end of last season with the Abbotsford Heat after finishing his junior career with the Gatineau Olympiques. Poirier had offseason shoulder surgery that slowed his march to the NHL.

Gaudreau made the Opening Night roster for the Flames, but has yet to register a point in three games. The former Hobey Baker Award winner has full support from the Flames, who say they have not placed any expectations on him. He had a 31-game point streak last season for Boston College despite constant knocks on his size.

Jankowski is another Hockey East product that was drafted in the first round in 2012. He is still considered a long-term investment despite many others picked ahead of him seeing time in the NHL already. His numbers have improved in two years with Providence College, and he registered an assist in his first game this season.

Granlund scored twice in seven games with the Flames last season after a 25-goal season with Abbotsford. He was the last cut before the final NHL roster this season despite a minor injury setback during training camp. Granlund figures to be one of the first call-ups this season.

Bennett is out for 4-6 months after today's shoulder surgery. The Flames will not rush his recovery as many thought he was the best pick in the opening round of the 2014 NHL Draft. Bennett and Monahan are the future at center for the Flames. The team was planning on giving Bennett a nine-game tryout at the beginning of this season.
