Anaheim Ducks’ Jason LaBarbera Gets Called Up, Roloson Plays Backup

Jason LaBarbera

The Anaheim Ducks have no shortage of good goaltending with Frederik Andersen and John Gibson in between the pipes. In fact, even though Andersen has gotten more starts this season, it’s hard to tell whether or not one will be the dedicated starter or if they will both continue to get looks throughout the season. In any case, the strategy is working as both netminders have been impressive thus far.

But sometimes things happen that you can’t predict. In this case, Andersen was out for the Ducks game Sunday with leg tightness so Gibson would look to get his fifth start of the season. However, in the pre-game skate Gibson also suffered a lower body injury, leaving only Jason LaBarbera on the bench.

LaBarbera would get the start for his third game in three nights as he played on Friday and Saturday with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. The problem then became who was going to back him up as neither Andersen or Gibson was available.

The Ducks would then look to their own goalie consultant, Dwayne Roloson, to play back up to LaBabera. Roloson last played on April 7, 2012 as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In typical Anaheim fashion this season, the Ducks’ netminder would play a solid game, turning aside 16 of 18 shots and helping the Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. It was LaBarbera’s first game playing with the Ducks, who only allowed seven shots in the last two periods.

The Ducks are now 10-3-0, winning their last two games and finishing their road trip 3-1-0.
