Many consider the Calgary Flames to be in the midst of a rebuild, but the way they are playing this season, it sure doesn’t look like it. In the spirit of Thanksgiving for our friends South of the border, here are five things Calgary Flames fans should be thankful for.

For most fans, you either love Brian Burke, or you hate Brian Burke. When it comes down to it, there is no guy I’d rather have than Burke when it comes to controlling a team, especially when rebuilding. He knows what it takes to win a cup, and while his title may not be General Manager, he’s certainly had a big influence on Calgary’s early-season success.

Calgary’s crop of young talent seems to be adjusting very well to the NHL. Sean Monahan leads the way, but with Johnny Gaudreau and even Josh Jooris right behind him there is bright times ahead in Calgary. Not to mention Sam Bennett, the number one 2014 draft prospect who is currently recovering from shoulder surgery.

3. Signing Jonas Hiller

One of Calgary’s top players this season, Jonas Hiller, has provided a strong presence in the crease for a team that was lacking it last season. Having confidence in your goalie only adds to your confidence as a player, and Hiller is a proven guy you can trust back in net. A great free agent signing for the Flames.

2. Bob Hartley

Coach Bob Hartley has done an exceptional job with his roster this season. He’s been able to look after the younger talent just emerging in the NHL, while maintaining a strong leadership role for the older guys. If Hartley stays with Calgary throughout the rebuilding process, it will only benefit the organization. Being on the same page with your coach is a must as a player.

Mark Giordano currently leads the Flames in points with 23, while T.J. Brodie has posted a very respectable 16 points. At 31 years old there are still plenty of good years left in Giordano, and at 24 Brodie is just coming into the prime of his career. These two will be an elite defensive pairing in the NHL for years to come.
