Johnny Gaudreau  of the Calgary Flames stands about 5-foot-8 on a good day, and I doubt he weighs 160 pounds, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming a giant slayer in his first NHL season.

The former Boston College Eagle has recorded four points in two games against the reigning Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings, and has done a great job at making some really good player look awful. What Gaudreau lacks in size, he makes up  for with an unbelievable array of shiftiness and crafty moves. This amazing array of skill helped Gaudreau record a natural hat trick to lead the Flames to a comeback win at Staples Center last week, and record an assist on the winning goal in Monday night’s game.

The Flames might be a young team, but they’re playing with plenty of confidence as there was not one ounce of fear shown in either matchup. For a player like Gaudreau, who was vastly overlooked because his lack of size, wreaking havoc against such a great team is surely frustrating for the 29 teams that passed  on him in the 2011 Draft.

The scary thing for the Kings is that the 21-year-old winger only get better, and they’re going to be seeing a lot of him in the Pacific Division for years to come. While the teams in California and British Columbia may rule the division for now, the upstart team in Southern Alberta will be in that mix for years to come.

Look for Gaudreau to be at the forefront of that rise for Calgary as he turns heads and dominates the opposition, just like he always has.
