The 5 Biggest NHL Game Changers of 2014

Big things are happening in the NHL this season. Regardless of where your hockey loyalties lie, these are the five players you have to see live before the season ends.

Tyler Seguin/ Dallas Stars

If you asked casual hockey fans to predict who’d be the league’s most prolific goal scorer this season, they might bandy about household names like the Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane, or the Lightning’s Steven Stamkos, or perhaps the Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin. Not many would have predicted Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin. He has 25 through December 29th, two more than the nearest competitor.

Vlad Tarasenko /St. Louis Blues

If we had to anoint a hypothetical Hart Trophy winner for the 2014 season thus far, St. Louis Blues forward Vlad Tarasenko would be our clear cut favorite. He’s just 22 and he’s playing like he’s starred in this league for a decade. Lighting quick and with a handle that will make your jaw drop, Tarasenko has been tearing up opposing defenders and goalies to the the tune of 20 goals and 37 points through December 20. Look at this goal against the Rangers for just a glimpse of what he’s capable of.

Rick Nash / New York Rangers

The defending Eastern champ New York Rangers started the season slow out of the gate, but the sterling play of Rick Nash has kept the team afloat in the Metro. The 30-year-old winger is another legitimate candidate for the Hart Trophy.

Tyler Ennis / Buffalo Sabres

Though his team is on the outside looking in of the NHL playoff picture, Buffalo Sabres ticket holders should be thankful for Tyler Ennis. His impossible no-look goal against Montreal remains the shot of the year. Even when you see it in slow-mo it seems hard to believe.

Marc-Andre Fleury / Pittsburgh Penguins

After years of poor playoff performances earned Marc-Andre Fleury a reputation as a choke artist, the Pittsburgh Penguins goalie is having the best regular season of his career. If he continues his hot streak to the postseason, a position that was once a (excuse the goalie pun) net-minus for the Pens has suddenly become a big net-positive.
