The 2015 year might be a huge year for the Calgary Flames. One game shy of the halfway point of the season and the Flames are in a three-way tie for third in the Pacific Division. If they can play well throughout the remainder of the season, the playoffs are a real possibility for a Flames club that wasn’t even supposed to be competitive. There will be some fun games to watch along the way. Here are the top five to look forward to in 2015.

5. Jan. 21: At Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks are not only a divisional opponent, but they are currently the best team in the league. The Flames already have a shootout win and a regulation loss against this Ducks team, both contests being one-goal games. It will be a tough test being that the Flames are at the Honda Center, so they lose home-ice advantage, but maybe having Jonas Hiller return to the building in which he called home for seven seasons will spark a great performance.

It’s a given, anytime the Flames and Oilers play each other hostilities are sure to be high. Calgary is already 3-0 against the Oilers this season, and while the games haven’t been as close as in years past, watching these two provincial rivals play is always fun.

3. Feb. 6: vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Flames will host Sidney Crosby and the Penguins at the Saddledome on Feb. 6. Anytime the best player in the world comes to your rink it’s sure to draw a crowd. This game also serves as a good measuring stick for the Flames, as the Penguins have a great amount of skill on their team. Calgary has an opportunity to redeem themselves having fallen to the Penguins 3-1 on Dec. 12.

Despite being divisional opponents, the Flames and Kings did not meet this season until Dec. 22, and they’ve already played two games against each other, Calgary having won both. Getting wins against the defending Stanley Cup champions is sure to be a great confidence booster and the Flames will have three more cracks at it this season with the Kings. The Apr. 9 contest also marks the last regular season home game for the Flames.

This game against the Jets is Calgary’s regular season finale. Of course, we can’t tell what the playoff picture will look like at this point, but ending the year on a win is still very important. And, it’s always possible that this game could decide if the Flames get in the playoffs, especially with how tight the Pacific Division is right now.
