5 Dallas Stars Trade Targets

The Dallas Stars sit just on the outside of the playoff picture as the 2015 NHL trade deadline looms. If they want to make it into the postseason this year they will have to target three areas. They need a defenseman willing to dish out hits and a goalie to help spell Kari Lehtonen. Finally they need someone to provide secondary scoring. Goal scoring will be tough to find through a trade, but there are some options for each area of weakness.

Petry is one of many Edmonton Oilers likely to be targeted by opposing teams in the coming weeks. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer and is hitting the prime of his career. Petry is a right-handed defenseman who can skate, so there should be plenty of suitors. He may not bring the toughness that Dallas needs, but he would help the team in many ways.

4. Michal Neuvirth

Jhonas Enroth is getting the biggest chance to take the top spot with the Buffalo Sabres. Neuvirth will be worth inquiring on since the Stars can offer a more stout defense. He had 45 saves against Tampa Bay in a loss on Jan. 9 to drive up his trade value. Teams could ask about either Sabres goalie, but Neuvirth is a bit bigger and showing good form lately.

A change of scenery could do Yakupov well and perhaps he would find his scoring touch in Dallas. Edmonton management has seemingly run out of patience waiting to see Yakupov's full potential materialize. Yakupov's $ 3.8 million cap hit will be attractive to many teams. The Stars need to at least make the phone call to see if the Oilers are ready to deal.

Kassian thinks he is getting a raw deal in Vancouver. He has been a healthy scratch of late and has yet to live up to his potential. He is a power forward willing to do the dirty work around the net, and these type of players are often targeted around the deadline as teams prepare for the physicality of the playoffs. Kassian's salary is cap friendly as well.

The injury to Braydon Coburn may change the Philadelphia Flyers' trade deadline plans. Before the injury they were ready to shop a veteran defenseman, but Grossman could still be available. His time on the ice has been down in January. Of course Grossman came over from Dallas, so going to a familiar team may ease the transition.
