With the incredible talent of the Sedin twins, it wasn’t really a question about whether the Vancouver Canucks could be good, only when they would be good again. After a disastrous season last year, the Canucks have picked it up and done well this year.

Obviously the New York Rangers are a good club, having made it to the Stanley Cup finals last season, but it says a lot about locker room character to come back from a defeat like that. The team has rebounded nicely, especially Rick Nash, and looks like it could be on its way to another deep playoff run.

8. San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks are a talented group that have struggled some this season but seem to have come out of it nicely. After their disastrous playoffs last year, where they were reverse swept, the team looks to be in a good playoff spot this year.

7. St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Blues have had a good team for multiple seasons that always seemed to fizzle out in the playoffs. This season could change that as the Blues seem to finally have players who can flat out produce. They’re currently third in the Western Conference.

The Washing Capitals are a good team that has done okay in recent years. This year, the team is renewed under head coach Barry Trotz. Most notably is their star, Alexander Ovechkin, who seems to have bought into Trotz’ system and is flourishing nicely.

The Calgary Flames have been a pretty big surprise this season. They don’t ever give up and they pester other teams until they do give up, which is how they win a lot of games. They’re currently in a playoff position.

4. Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers didn’t have the greatest start to their season, but the team has been like a train, slowly picking up steam and then going full force ahead. We knew Roberto Luongo would be good, but it seems the team has followed.

The Detroit Red Wings haven’t missed the playoffs in years, but it certainly hasn’t always been easy, especially the last few years. But this season the Red Wings are really starting to pick it up, and under the leadership of Henrik Zetterberg, have gone all the way up to second place in the Eastern Conference.

2. New York Islanders

Besides the Nashville Predators, there may not be a more surprisingly good team this season than the New York Islanders. Though the skill has been there for a while, the team has strung a long group of wins together to top the Eastern Conference.

The Nashville Predators have been having a great season so far, battling it out with the Anaheim Ducks for the No. 1 spot in the Western Conference for a while now. For a team that wasn’t very good last season, they’ve come back with a vengeance to being a Stanley Cup contender.
