5 Last-Minute Trades the Toronto Maple Leafs Should Consider Before the 2015 Deadline

This year’s Toronto Maple Leafs team has been, to put it bluntly, an absolute debacle for the ages. As the team looks to sell assets going into the trade deadline, here are five moves that would aid in their never-ending rebuilding process.

5. Roman Polak to the Los Angeles Kings

The Kings need help on defense, and Polak would give them a defensive complement to Drew Doughty. Los Angeles would likely be willing to part with decent prospects and moderately high picks to land Polak, and I’m sure the Leafs would be interested in such a trade.

4. Daniel Winnik to the Winnipeg Jets

With Evander Kane gone and Mathieu Perreault injured, the Jets need some help at forward and Winnik is a perfect fit. The Leafs need to get a return for him as he’s an expiring contract and is leaving at the end of the year either way. Winnik’s speed and skill would be worth at least a second-round pick, which would surely help the Leafs’ rebuild.

3. Joffrey Lupul to the Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks are loading up for the stretch run, and despite his injury history, I think Lupul could be a fantastic fit in Vancouver. Look for the Leafs to inquire about power forward Zach Kassian in any deal with the Canucks.

2. Dion Phaneuf to the Detroit Red Wings

Trading away the team captain would completely signify a changing of the guard in Toronto. I think Phaneuf would be a great fit in “Hockeytown” as a change of scenery could work well for everyone. The young players/draft picks and salary cap relief could be just what Toronto needs to establish a brighter future.

1. Phil Kessel to the Florida Panthers

This could be a win-win-win as the Leafs need the young assets Florida has, the Panthers need a speedy sniper on the wing and Kessel could use a change of scenery. Such a blockbuster trade would shake up the Eastern Conference and make Florida a dark horse in the playoffs, while allowing the Leafs to have a “clean slate” in addition to a plethora of talented young players acquired via trade.

Chicago Blackhawks' Scott Darling Robs Toronto Maple Leafs

The Chicago Blackhawks steamrolled over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night by a score of 7-2. Chicago did so with backup goaltender Scott Darling in net, and they didn't skip a beat. Darling's miraculous effort against Nick Spaling resulted in what many are calling a save of the year candidate.
