The Toronto Maple Leafs are entering an offseason that’s expected to change the course of the team’s future for years to come. The Maple Leafs are going to undergo a massive roster overhaul resulting in new rumors surfacing constantly over who the club could be looking at shipping out of town and who they could be looking at acquiring. Here are the top five Maple Leafs rumors heading into the offseason.

Rumors of either Eric or Jordan Staal heading to Toronto have been around for years, and with both the Maple Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes looking to make big changes this offseason, those rumors aren't going away anytime soon.

Cody Franson recently admitted he'd be open to a return to Toronto as a free agent this summer despite being traded away near the trade deadline this season. With new faces expected in training camp next year, it wouldn't be surprising to also see a player who was recently traded away like Franson, Mike Santorelli or Daniel Winnik manage to return as a free agent this summer.

It was rumored Dion Phaneuf was nearly traded to the Detroit Red Wings at this year's trade deadline but things fell through on the deal. It now appears those Phaneuf-to-Detroit rumors have returned, and although he might not end up in red and white, his time in blue and white certainly seems to have come to an end.

2. Trading Kessel

Phil Kessel rumors will be popping up every day until he's moved, from news he'd be open to going back to Boston, to Washington wanting to pair him with Alex Ovechkin on their top line. The Maple Leafs are determined to change their core group, and it seems there's plenty of value in a 30-goal scorer who is still three years away from his 30th birthday.

1. Moving Up in the Draft

The Maple Leafs know they aren't getting Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel at the draft, but Dylan Strome has been a rumored favorite and someone the club is interested in. Unfortunately, Toronto only owns the No. 4 overall pick and Strome is likely to be selected at No. 3. Brendan Shanahan could view Strome as the franchise player a team can build around and do what is necessary in order to move up and select the center.

The Chicago Blackhawks steamrolled over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night by a score of 7-2. Chicago did so with backup goaltender Scott Darling in net, and they didn't skip a beat. Darling's miraculous effort against Nick Spaling resulted in what many are calling a save of the year candidate.
