Just two days after the Philadelphia Flyers gave Sean Couturier a six-year, $26 million contract extension, the Flyers have officially extended star winger Jakub Voracek.

The new deal is reportedly an eight-year contract extension worth $66 million, $8.25 million a year, which Voracek has earned completely. Since being drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2007, Voracek has been one of the more consistent, durable players in the NHL, only missing eight games in his entire career.

While Voracek has been consistent, he broke his streak of consistent point outputs in 2014-15 in the best way possible. Before last season, Voracek’s career high in points was 62 in the 2013-14 season. Voracek shattered that with 81 points in 82 games last season, which was good for fifth best in the league.

With 59 assists and 22 goals last year, the Jake Voracek, Claude Giroux line was easily one of the best in the league. Both forwards are signed with the Flyers through the 2022 season, giving the team quite a formidable one-two punch on the first line for the next seven years (unless the Flyers decide to break them apart like they did periodically last season).

Before the deal was made, there was a bit of mystery surrounding the Flyers’ depth at wing. The Flyers drafted the versatile McGuire Award-winning forward Travis Konecny of the Ottawa 67’s in the draft this past June, but the main concern among Flyers fans was Voracek’s future. There’s no need to panic anymore.

The Flyers are going to be quite a different team in coming seasons. With a plethora of young studs like Konecny, Samuel Morin, Shayne Gostisbehere and Ivan Provorov making their way up to the big club sooner rather than later, the Flyers will be a much younger, faster team than they are now. But with all the changes in the coming seasons, expect Jakub Voracek to be an integral part of the Flyers’ success for years to come.
