On the eve of the 2015-16 NHL campaign, the prognosticators had envisioned the Anaheim Ducks as an early favorite for a Stanley Cup championship in June. Five games into the six-month, 82-game season and there is only one victory to their record. Rumors have been circulating about whether the team should axe their head coach, Bruce Boudreau, and one name being discussed as a possible replacement is the Ducks former coach, Randy Carlyle, possibly returning to Anaheim. If rumors end up becoming reality, it will not benefit the organization at all.
Carlyle won 273 games over the course of just under six and a half seasons in California as the coach. The highest point in his career has to be his second season as head coach, winning a Stanley Cup along with former Ducks GM Brian Burke. Over the course of just over three and a half seasons as the current bench boss of the Ducks, Boudreau has won 162 games, but had limited success during the playoffs on the west coast. The Ducks have not started off this season the way team management or their fans would have liked. That’s pretty obvious, and while this is not an article suggesting that Boudreau should be saved, firing him and replacing him with Carlyle is not the answer.
During Carlyle’s stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he clearly could not teach and relate to young players on the roster well. This doesn’t make any sense for the future of goalie prospects John Gibson and Frederik Andersen. During his first stint in Anaheim, he also couldn’t mix well with the franchise superstars Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf.
Rehiring former coaches to return to a familiar franchise has worked in the past and most recently with the Montreal Canadiens bringing back head coach Michel Therrien. However, welcoming Carlyle back to the Honda Center would cause more disasters on a heart-breaking start to the campaign.
