5 Players the Buffalo Sabres Should Trade Right Now

Jack Eichel — The Buffalo Sabres had an abysmal season last year, but they were rewarded with drafting Jack Eichel No. 2 overall in last summer's NHL Entry Draft. Last season GM Tim Murray stripped the team of veterans consistently. If they have aspirations of obtaining 2016 top draft pick Auston Matthews, Murray needs to continue to do the same this year and move these five men prior to the NHL trade deadline in February.

Carlo Colaiacovo — Let's not get ridiculous here, because trading Colaiacovo is not going to get a lot in return for the Sabres. The 32-year-old is taking away a position on the blue line that could be occupied by a youngster or one acquired via a trade.

Brian Gionta — Gionta's best playing days are clearly behind him. He's coming off a 35 point, 69 game season last year, and when this franchise becomes relevant again, Gionta's playing days will be long gone. He is 36 years old now, and if he produces on any level, perhaps Murray can flip him for a draft pick or prospect.

Matt Moulson — This is an interesting one to include in this list, but you have to consider dealing him again. He was traded during the 2013-14 campaign but has not lost his touch for scoring goals. GM Tim Murray may have already dealt Moulson in the past, but he has to be open to doing it again.

Chad Johnson — Goalie Chad Johnson was thrust into the starting job after Robin Lehner was injured in the season opener. Lehner will be back soon, and Johnson has proved that he can handle the rigors of a full schedule. He could be dealt to become a backup for another team with goalie Linus Ullmark ready to handle the backup role when Lehner returns.

David Legwand — Legwand is an obvious one to deal, as his best playing days appear to be behind him. He has some abilities to put the puck in the net after a career with the Nashville Predators, Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators. However, he is 35 years old and needs to be dealt before he gets injured or his playing decreases as he ages gracefully.
