15 NHL Players You Wouldn't Want To Meet In A Dark Alley

It's no argument that hockey is the toughest sport in the world. That being said, there are certain players in the league that you just don't want to mess with, whether it's on the ice or in a dark alley. Here's my top-15 guys I just wouldn't want to see in a dark alley with no one around.

15. Jarred Tinordi

Although Tinordi has yet to earn a full roster spot with the Habs, he’s still not someone you want to mess with. The 24-year-old has a 6-foot-6 frame and can pack a lot of power in his punch. When Tinordi is ready for full-time NHL duty, the league will be on notice.

14. Brian Boyle

Although Brian Boyle isn’t the best fighter in the league, the guy is tower of power. Stepping onto the ice at 6-foot-7, 243 pounds, Boyle is someone you just wouldn’t want to mess with. In the video, you’ll see that no one is safe from Boyle’s potential wrath as he gets into a scrap with teammate Brandon Dubinsky.

13. Dion Phaneuf

Dion Phaneuf is a punishing physical defensemen who really won't take much crap from anyone. As you see in the picture, he’s all for bloodshed. The captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs has shown that he’s not about to take any prisoners when on the ice, and that's a trait that more than likely follows him off the ice too. Phaneuf also has one of those menacing faces that would make you run the other way if you saw him in a dark alley.

12. Shea Weber

The owner of the hardest shot in hockey history, Shea Weber is another one of those guys who you just don’t want to mess with. The captain of the Nashville Predators, Weber has brought a physical, intimidating brand of hockey that has helped turn Nashville into ‘Smashville.’ Shea Weber is the prime example of the guy you love to have on your team and the guy you try to avoid if he’s not.

11. Dustin Byfuglien

Dustin Byfuglien has been a menace to forwards ever since he entered the league in 2005-06. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound 33-year-old has plenty of veteran savvy with a mean-streak a mile wide. In 617 career games, Byfuglien has posted 715 penalty minutes. He loves the sin-bin and knows what it takes to get there.

10. David Backes

David Backes is the type of captain you want to fight for. He leads by example on the ice, whether it’s delving out punishing hits, scoring big goals or even fighting the other team's captain, Backes is the guy you want to go to war with. The 6-foot-3 forward is just the type of guy you never want to tick off unless you’ve got a team of guys to support you.

A former first-round draft pick, Chris Stewart is a guy you just never want to mess with. The 6-foot-2 forward has racked up 548 penalty minutes in 482 career games. He has no fear and will drop the gloves with anyone at anytime. He’s a physical forward who can deliver big-time hits that could change the momentum of a game.

8. Milan Lucic

Typically, tough guys aren’t supposed to have offensive ability. Milan Lucic is the oddity of this rule. There’s nothing Lucic loves more than getting under the skin of the opposing team and then scoring the goal that sinks the opponent. The 6-foot-3 forward has posted 790 penalty minutes in his 585 career games, but he’s notched 145 goals and 208 assists.

7. Johnny Boychuk

Johnny Boychuk may be one of the toughest players on this list. He’s also got one of the hardest slapshots in the game. Anytime Boychuk winds up to shoot, you just pray that shot doesn’t hit you or any of your teammates. The 6-foot-2, 227-pounder is someone you just don’t want to mess with, whether it’s in a dark alley or a lit-up stadium.

6. Steve Downie

One of the most infamous players in NHL history, Steve Downie is the type of lunatic who will beat you for the pleasure of it. Standing at just 5-foot-11, Downie may not be the biggest and most menacing, but there’s no argument that Downie is one of the toughest guys in all of the NHL. More than anyone else, Downie has the best relationship with the guys in the sin-bin, as he’s logged 1,034 penalty minutes in just 422 career games.

5. Ryan Reaves

Ryan Reaves is the type of physical forward who dishes out abuse like it’s a Thanksgiving side dish. He has no concern for his body nor the bodies of his opponents. Coming in at 6-foot-1 and 224 pounds, Reaves has demonstrated that he will fight just about anyone, anywhere, and at anytime. If you ever see this guy looking at you the wrong way on the Subway, my suggestion to you would be crouch and pray.

4. John Scott

Although he’s my least favorite hockey player, and I use the term hockey player lightly, John Scott has proven that he’s a man you don’t want to meet in any dark alley or street corner. In the video, you’ll see that Scott is only out to injure or maim players because there’s no possible way he’ll hurt you with offensive skill.

3. Matt Martin

You want to get into a scrap with Matt Martin? Just ask Tom Kostopoulos how that will turn out. Martin is the perfect bottom-six forward who can bring energy and toughness. Not to mention, he’s got a mean right hammer that he could drop. If you ever wonder why no one is taking runs at John Tavares, just keep replaying that video.

2. Zdeno Chara

If you don’t already know that Zdeno Chara is a physical freak, then you’ve been living under a rock for the past decade. The 6-foot-9 All-Star is one of the best and meanest defensemen to ever lace up the skates for the Boston Bruins. In the above video, Chara almost ends the career of Max Pacioretty with a brutal hit, and Chara barely wasted any effort.

Pound-for-pound, Brandon Prust is the best fighter in the NHL. Prust is a great energy guy to have on your roster, not to mention he’s the guy who would protect your All-Star forwards if say a goon like John Scott decided to take a run at them. If I ever saw Brandon Prust in a dark alley, I might have to resort to the fetal position, crying for my mother.
