The Pittsburgh Penguins have struggled this season to be the dominant team they’ve always been. If Pittsburgh wants to succeed, then it will be up to Sidney Crosby to find his game and push the team back to the top of the NHL standings.

Pittsburgh currently sits in the middle of the Metropolitan Division with 28 points. The New York Islanders are tied in points and the New Jersey Devils are just two points behind. This is unusual for the Penguins, who are usually the NHL’s best.

Pittsburgh’s big offseason trade in acquiring Phil Kessel has done nothing to change the team’s current situation with just 15 points in 23 games. It also doesn’t help that Crosby struggled in the early stages of the season and has only now started to find his game again, but not to the extent fans expect. In 23 games this season Crosby has just 15 points, which is below his standard of being a point-per-game player.

Pittsburgh is lucky that they have another star player in Evgeni Malkin who has 22 points in 23 games, which has helped the team stay where they are in the standings.

Crosby’s constant injuries may be the culprit behind his stunted play recently. Normally Crosby holds onto the puck and sets up plays in the offensive zone, often in the corners fending off the opposing defenders for long periods of time. This season Crosby barely holds the puck longer than a few seconds before passing it off. His series of concussions may have made him reluctant to hold onto the puck to avoid being body checked and possibly injured again.

If Pittsburgh wants to do well this season, then it’s up to Sidney Crosby to find his game again and lead the team on the ice and on the scoreboard.
