Patrik Berglund Has Been Revelation For St. Louis Blues Since Returning From Injury

By Todd Panula

Love him or hate him, one thing is for sure – Patrik Berglund has been great since his return from injury. That has not always been the case, and it may not continue to be the case. However, given the injury issues that the St. Louis Blues have gone through, they need Berglund to be as good as he has been.

Berglund had his 10th multi-goal game in a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils and would have had a hat-trick if not for hitting the post on what looked like a sure goal. What is more is the tenacity and skill that Berglund has shown since his return. Those are things that have not been there at times during his career even when he has had the freedom to not need them.

Now, when the Blues need those things from him most, he has actually produced. In only six games played after missing half the season, Berglund already has three goals and four points. They haven’t been garbage points either. They have been important points at crucial times of games.

Could this be the player fans have been hoping for since his draft year? Only time will tell. Berglund has had decent statistical years in the past, but he disappears for long stretches and has absolutely no impact on any shift in some games. If he can impact games the way he has lately, that is more important than simply scoring goals. Obviously the goals are great, but St. Louis needs him to be an impact player.

He needs to use his size and not shrink from contact. When Berglund is on top of his game, he is nearly impossible to take off the puck. That kind of possession is golden in the tough areas of the ice. If the goals continue to come, that’s gravy, but if Berglund can at least continue this run of form it can only be a good thing for the team. Berglund doesn’t need to lead this injury-riddled team in scoring, but if he can be a leader then it takes pressure off a lot of people.
