AccuScore's Free Pick of the Day #9 concentrates on NHL where the 1st playoff games are about to start.
If the Rangers are to win the Stanley Cup this season, they will face arguably the most difficult path of any Eastern Conference team.
Justin Williams plays in his 1,000th NHL game, and his family, teammates and fans are there to cheer him on. The video shown on the jumbotron to honor him is superb.
Ryan Pullock winds up for a slapshot that he declines to take and instead slaps a pass to a well-positioned Matt Martin who scores on a one-timer. The Islanders made the right passes to make this play look easy.
Nikolay Kulemin managed a nifty move to split the Philadelphia Flyers' defensemen and was able to backhand it through the legs of Michal Neuvirth, who must desperately want this one back. I bet Flyers defenseman Brandon Manning wishes he had held on to his stick more tightly, as Kulemin made him look silly by knocking the stick out of his hands and high into the air during the play.
A perhaps frustrated Detroit Red Wings fan threw two octopuses on the ice after having travelled to watch the team play in Boston. It didn't make a lot of sense as this is usually done in the playoffs, the Red Wings were losing hopelessly and it is never a good idea to interrupt play. Anyhow, they don't put up with this kind of thing at TD Garden in Boston, MA. The Red Wings fan was later arrested.
Jason Spezza controlled an airborne puck with his chest like a soccer player before wristing the grounded puck past Nashville Predators goalie Carter Hutton. This was a great passing play from the Dallas Stars.
Philadelphia Flyers' Wayne Simmonds skated into the slot as Shayne Gostisbehere delayed a slapshot from the point until the perfect time. Simmonds scored his second goal of the night by creating traffic in the slot, and with the puck deflecting off of his chest and past the screened Penguins goaltender, Jeff Zatkoff.
After receiving the gentlest of saucer passes from teammate Carl Hagelin, Nick Bonino shot it past Steve Mason for his eighth goal of the season. Bonino has been making things happen lately as he was credited with three assists in a recent game against the Senators.
After some lengthy shenanigans behind the Buffalo Sabres' net, Alexander Wennberg fed the puck to Brandon Saad who was already low to the ice and ready to elevate the puck for his 30th goal of the season.
From the angle that Matt Calvert shot from, he did not have a lot of open net to look at but he managed to fire the puck past Buffalo Sabres goaltender Jason Kasdorf's glove with tremendous velocity.
