The great news on the recruiting front continues for the Irish. On Friday, Will Mahone, one of the top running backs in the entire country, announced that has committed to playing football at Notre Dame for the next four years.

Mahone becomes the first true running back commit for the Irish in the 2012 class, although David Perkins has said that he will be playing in the backfield come next season as a true freshman. The high school senior out of  Ohio is a four-star, 10th ranked overall running back in the country, according to Scout.

Scout lists acceleration, balance and cutback ability as Mahone’s strengths and breakaway speed as one of his weaknesses. Here are some comments from Allen Trieu, the Midwest Regional Manager over at Scout.com.

Some may question his timed speed, but his game speed is there and he may end up as the top back in the state. He’s closer to that title than many think. I really believe he’ll be a top flight college back. He’s compact, can run inside and outside, and regardless of what he times at, has shown he can break long runs as well as be an effective return man.

From those comments, Mahone will more than likely be a bruising type back similar into the mold of a Jonas Gray. Standing at 6-foot and weighing over 200 pounds, the youngster has a frame where he can add another 15 pounds or so and still be effective running the football. Just wait until Paul Longo gets his hands on him.

Even with adding a running back, the Irish aren’t done adding on to this class. Many expect the Irish to have a great shot at getting Keith Marshall, a speedster back who is the best overall at his position in the country. Lets hope that comes true!
