Despite Reports, Nnamdi Asomugha Still a Possibility for Raiders

It’s no secret that star Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is a free agent.

The Raider Nation is crossing its fingers that Aso will be back, but ask any NFL expert if he’ll re-sign and the answer would be “I’d be pretty shocked”.

Those are NFL experts though. Not Oakland Raiders experts—something I consider myself to be.

The truth is that the salary cap maximum is most likely to be set at $120 million.

My gut instincts, with information I’ve read and been told, is that the new CBA will not include dead money.

If not, the Oakland Raiders are saved.

Oakland has $26 million in dead money owed. If that isn’t included in 2011, their payroll will be $103.5 million.

Kamerion Wimbley is scheduled to be payed $11 million, but it’s almost a guarantee that he’ll receive a long-term contract. Give him $7 million this year.

That brings the payroll to $99.5 million.

Zach Miller receives, say, $9 million a year.

Payroll is at $108.5 million.

Michael Huff is not expected to be back. Same with Robert Gallery and Cooper Carslisle.

Michael Bush will be payed $2.5 million in 2011, bringing the payroll to $111 million.

After we see guys like Chris Johnson leave, that number is sure to be lower. Let’s say Johnson is the only player to be cut.

The payroll would be $107.5 million. Not enough cash for Aso, but say you release a few others, that number could be as low as $100 million.

Which gives the Raiders 20 million dollars to work with. With no first round pick and a rookie cap on the way, don’t include much cash to rookies.

Just saying. Asomugha back with the Silver and Black is a real possibility.

Keep in mind that Stanford Routt, Richard Seymour, Rock Cartwright, Hiram Eugene, John Henderson and any others signed before the lockout will not be receiving any cash until the season begins.

That’s obviously a plan Al Davis has devised to retain Nnamdi.

We shall see.

Every year the Raiders do something to surprise the league. This year I would hope, and also see it as a possibility, that they would retain the services of the best NFL corner in the league.

Not exactly sure if I have this right, but Jason La Canfora of NFL Network was explaining the rules of the Salary Cap. Again, not entirely sure if i understood correctly, but it sounded as if signing bonuses don’t count towards the cap total. So if the Raiders offered Nnamdi a 3 year, 48 million dollar deal with 30 million guaranteed, you would subtract the difference and divide by the number of years, so his salary would count as 6 million towards the cap. Does that sound right? Or did I misinterpret?
