BREAKING: Reports Indicate Oklahoma Sooners’ Brent Venables Heading to Clemson
Reports are surfacing that current Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator Brent Venables will agree to become the next defensive coordinator at Clemson.
The Tulsa World’s Dave Sittler posted the following on Twitter this afternoon, around 4:30 p.m. CST:
“Clemson media saying it’s a done deal with Venables to Clemson. Delay on Venables reportedly was the time needed to do extensive background check that Terry Don Phillips requires on every hire.”
Sittler also posted information from a source close to Venables a bit later.
“Source close to Venables: “Nothing signed.” Assume that’s only because Clemson regents need to approve contract.”
In addition to that, The Greenville News reported this morning that Venables would become the Tiger’s defensive coordinator.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it would appear that Venables’ time in Norman is coming to a close. The 41-year old coach has been on staff at OU since 1999 when Bob Stoops became the head coach at OU. Venables recently became co-defensive coordinator again when former colleague Mike Stoops was brought back on as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach.
Venables’ potential contract has been sent to the Clemson Board of Trustees for approval.
