Interesting Scenario With Oklahoma Sooners Quarterback Landry Jones and Oklahoma Coaches
It’s been well documented now that Oklahoma Sooners senior quarterback Landry Jones spent his spring break in California, working with quarterback guru George Whitfield.
Jones decided it’d be more productive than sitting on a beach soaking up some vitamin D, especially since 2012 will be his last year in Norman before moving on to the NFL.
Jones was joined by Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd, and they in turn joined former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck to work with Whitfield.
It appears that everyone knows about it, but the people you’d think would know first, Jones’ coaches, did not.
After practice Tuesday, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops was speaking to reporters, including the Tulsa World’s John Hoover and Guerin Emig. Here’s the interaction that took place, according to Hoover, who wrote about it later:
Q: What did you know of George Whitfield?
Stoops: “I didn’t know anything.”
You didn’t know anything of him before Landry went out there?
“I’ve heard of him, but don’t know him.”
Did you encourage him to go?
“No. I didn’t know he did it.”
Oklahoman columnist Berry Tramel: “If you had known about it, you would’ve been fine with it?”
“Sure. Why not,” Stoops replied. “I think it’s always good to get any little pointer from anybody you can. You can assess it all you want, how much of it you use. If you think I’m at all sensitive here and how they’ve been schooled, I think you’re mistaken. I think ours is maybe as good as there is in the country. I’m not real insecure about what we’ve been doing.”
Honestly, I think it’s very surprising Jones, whose character has been praised constantly by the coaching staff, didn’t inform coaches of his plans to work with Whitfield.
Now, it certainly doesn’t seem to be a big deal, especially based on Stoops’ responses to the questions about it. After all, different coaches are going to notice different things a quarterback should work on. It’s always a good thing to have several sets of eyes watching for areas of improvement.
Oklahoma has some terrific coaches, and quarterback is one of the positions that have defined OU, and helped lead the Sooners to success over the past 13 years. Current quarterbacks coach Josh Heupal led OU to the 2000 national championship, and current St. Louis Rams starter Sam Bradford won the 2008 Heisman Trophy. Jones stands poised to shatter every OU passing record this season, many of which won’t be touched by those to follow.
I’m sure the Oklahoma coaches would have liked to know what their four-year starting quarterback was doing with his spring break, but in the end, it’s not a huge deal. Certainly is interesting, though.
